Spring Awakening is a Tony Award-winning rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater. The musical is based on the controversial 1891 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind. Set in late-nineteenth century Germany, it concerns teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality. The original play was banned in Germany due to its portrayal of masturbation, abortion, rape and suicide. In the musical, alt-rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score. During the musical, characters sometimes break the fourth wall to express their motivations and desires directly to the audience.

After a number of workshops, concerts and rewrites over a seven-year period, Spring Awakening premiered Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theatre Company on May 19, 2006 and ran through August 17, 2006. The show then opened on Broadway at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on December 10, 2006 and received favorable reviews. Spring Awakening received eleven 2007 Tony Award nominations, winning eight, including Tonys for best musical, direction, book, score and featured actor. The show also won four Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Musical. The production is directed by Michael Mayer and choreographed by Bill T. Jones.

In 1982, Etheridge moved from Leavenworth, Kansas to Los Angeles to break into the music business. She got some small gigs performing at The Candy Store on the Sunset Strip, as well as two lesbian bars, the Executive Suite in Long Beach and Vermie’s in Pasadena. Some of her early fans from Vermie’s gave her demo tape to Bill Leopold, a friend’s husband who worked in the music business. Etheridge auditioned for Leopold, who was so impressed that he offered to represent her on the spot.

As Etheridge continued performing in lesbian bars in Los Angeles, Leopold arranged for music executives to come see her play. Eventually, she caught the attention of A&M Records, who hired her as a staff songwriter. For two years, Etheridge wrote music for A&M and many of her songs were recorded by mainstream artists. In 1985, Etheridge sent her demo to Olivia Records, a lesbian record label, but was ultimately rejected. She saved the rejection letter, signed by “the women of Olivia,” which was later featured in Intimate Portrait (TV series), the Lifetime Television documentary of her life.

The Phantom of the Opera in Seattle

By: Spencer    Category: Attractions, Paramount Theater Seattle Tickets

I have never seen this show but I hope to soon. The Phantom of the Opera is one of those shows that needs to be seen at least once. It is playing for several nights at the Paramount Theater here in Seattle. Here is some info from wikipedia:

The Phantom of the Opera (in French, Le Fantôme de l’Opéra) is a French novel by Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910. Some believe it to have been inspired by George du Maurier’s Trilby. Trilby is based on real events related to the Paris Opera House which Leroux investigated, initiated by stories of an opera house ghost. Initially, the novel sold very poorly and was even out of print several times during the twentieth century. Today, it is considered to be a classic of French literature, though it is overshadowed by its many subsequent adaptations. The novel was translated into English in 1911. It has since been adapted many times into and stage productions, the most notable of which were the 1925 film depiction and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical, starring Michael Crawford as the Phantom, Steve Barton as Raoul, and Sarah Brightman as Christine, which is now the longest running Broadway show in history and the most lucrative entertainment enterprise of all time, its worldwide box office over the past 20 years out-grossing even the highest grossing film in history, Titanic.

Billy Idol Tickets in Seattle

Avenue Q Tickets in Seattle

By: Spencer    Category: Attractions, Paramount Theater Seattle Tickets

I don’t know anything about this show so I am giving you a little extra from wikipedia. The show is at the Paramount Theater here in Seattle. Here is some info from wikipedia:

Avenue Q is an award-winning musical conceived by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, who wrote the music and lyrics, and directed by Jason Moore. The book is by Jeff Whitty. The show was produced by and opened at the Off-Broadway Vineyard Theatre in March 2003. The production transferred to Broadway in July 2003 and won several Tony Awards, including the award for Best Musical. It is still running on Broadway and holds the position of 28th longest running musical in Broadway history. The show has spawned a 2005 Las Vegas production, a 2006 West End production and various international productions. A U.S. national tour began in July 2007.

The show is largely inspired by (and is in the style of) Sesame Street: Most of the characters in the show are puppets (operated by actors onstage), the set depicts several tenements on a rundown street in an “outer borough” of New York City, both the live characters and puppet characters sing, and short animated video clips are played as part of the story. Also, several characters are recognizably parodies of classic Sesame Street characters: for example, the roommates Rod and Nicky are versions of Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie, and Trekkie Monster is based on Cookie Monster. However, the characters are in their twenties and thirties and face adult problems instead of those faced by pre-schoolers. The characters use profanity, and the songs concern adult themes. A recurring theme is the central character’s search for a “purpose.” Since the musical soundtrack for it was released, the song “The Internet is For Porn” has become particularly popular on websites such as YouTube and can be downloaded for free from the official website.

Tom Jones Tickets in Seattle

By: Spencer    Category: Paramount Theater Seattle Tickets, Concerts

Good old Tom Jones is coming to the Paramount Theater soon. Come out to Seattle to see him. Here is some info from wikipedia:

Tom Jones rose to fame in the mid-1960s, with an exuberant live act that included wearing tight breeches and billowing shirts, in an Edwardian style popular among his peers at the time. He was known for his overt sexuality, before this was as common as it has become in subsequent years.

In 1963 he became the frontman for Tommy Scott and The Senators, a local beat group. Clad in black leather, he soon gained a reputation in the South Wales area of the United Kingdom, although the Senators were still unknown in London.

In 1964 they laid down seven tracks with maverick Telstar producer Joe Meek, and took them to various labels in an attempt to get a record deal, with no success. The plan was to release a single, Lonely Joe / I Was A Fool, but the ever-flighty Meek refused to release the tapes. Only after It’s Not Unusual became a massive hit, Meek was able to sell the tapes to Tower (USA) and Columbia (UK). The group returned to South Wales and continued to play gigs at dance halls and working men’s clubs. One night, at the Top Hat in Cwmtillery, Jones was spotted by Gordon Mills, a London-based manager originally from South Wales. Mills became Jones’ manager, and took the young singer to London. He also renamed him Tom Jones, an ingenious moniker that not only linked the singer to the image of the title character - a good-looking, low-born stud - portrayed in Tony Richardson’s film of Fielding’s “Tom Jones”, which was a huge contemporary hit, but also subtly emphasized his nationality. Gordon Mills gave many rock stars their stage names, among them Engelbert Humperdinck (born Arnold George Dorsey). The Senators became the Playboys, and later still the Squires. It was the beginning of the second phase in Jones’ career.

311 Tickets in Seattle

By: Spencer    Category: Paramount Theater Seattle Tickets, Concerts

Now here is a band that has a lot of different sounds. 311 is coming to the Paramount Theater and you need to get your butt to Seattle to see it. Check out this info from wikipedia:

Chad and Jim began playing all over Omaha in bars and pubs as the “Fish Hippos” while trying to convince Nick to come back from Germany and join the band to open a show for Fugazi. Nick agreed but wanted to change the band’s name from the “Fish Hippos”. 311 became their name after an incident in which Wills and Watson were caught skinny dipping by police. The two were charged for violating Omaha code 311 (indecent exposure). The group found this hilarious and the number stuck.

In 1990, Hexum started his own little record company, called What Have You Records, for the purpose of releasing 311 albums. Their first release, Dammit!, was released that year on consignment in record stores throughout Omaha. By 1991, Jim Watson had decided he didn’t want to be in 311 anymore. After he left, the remaining members asked their friend Tim Mahoney to take over for Watson.

In 1991, 311 released their second independent release, Unity, and was released with far greater numbers. While Dammit! only printed 300 cassettes, Unity had 1000 CDs and 500 cassettes printed and was distributed through consignment and also sold at shows. The band began to headline shows in local clubs, such as The Ranch Bowl and Sokol Auditorium, and became a local success.

1992 was a big year for 311. SA Martinez, who had been making various appearances with 311 over the past years as a vocalist, had officially been asked to join the band. The newly formed 311 recorded a six-track demo, called Hydroponic, and moved to Los Angeles. Within their first few months, 311 was signed to Capricorn Records.

Mamma Mia Tickets in Seattle

By: Spencer    Category: Paramount Theater Seattle Tickets, Concerts

The Play Mamma Mia is coming to Seattle. It is showing at the Paramount Theater for a bunch of nights. Here is some info from wikipedia:

Mamma Mia! is a musical with a book by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of ABBA, composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. It is an example of a jukebox musical, and is notable for popularizing the genre.

Although the title of the musical is taken from the group’s 1975 chart-topper “Mamma Mia”, the musical’s plot has nothing to do with the story of the group itself.

Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, who composed the original music for ABBA, have been involved in the development of the show from the beginning. Anni-Frid Lyngstad has been involved financially in the production, while Agnetha Fältskog has not, though she was present at the Swedish premiere and final show.

The musical includes such hits as “Super Trouper”, “Dancing Queen”, “Knowing Me, Knowing You”, “Thank You for the Music”, “Money Money Money”, “The Winner Takes It All”, “Voulez Vous”, “I Have A Dream” and “SOS”. It had been seen by over 10 million people worldwide as of July 2003. Estimates of 2007, is that 30 million have now seen Mamma Mia!. Since its opening in 1999, the production has grossed US$2.0 billion in earnings, making it the most successful musical in history.

A film version of Mamma Mia!, starring Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep began filming in June 2007 and is scheduled for a Summer 2008 release.

Brian Hugh Warner (born 5 January 1969), better known by his stage name Marilyn Manson, is an American musician and artist known for his outrageous stage persona and image as the lead singer of the eponymous band. His stage name was formed from the names of actress Marilyn Monroe and convicted murderer Charles Manson

Warner formed Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids in Florida in 1989 (the name was shortened to Marilyn Manson in 1992). While with The Spooky Kids, he was involved with Jeordie White (also known as Twiggy Ramirez) and Stephen Gregory Bier Jr. (also known as Madonna Wayne Gacy) in two side-projects: Satan on Fire, a faux-Christian death metal ensemble where he played bass, and drums in Mrs. Scabtree, a collaborative band formed with White and then girlfriend Jessicka (vocalist with the band Jack Off Jill)as a way to combat contractual agreements that prohibited Marilyn Manson from playing in certain clubs. In the summer of 1993, the band drew the attention of Trent Reznor. Reznor produced their 1994 debut album, Portrait of an American Family and released it on his Nothing Records label. The band began to develop a cult following, which grew larger with the release of Smells Like Children in 1995. That EP yielded the band’s first big MTV hit with “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)”, a cover of the 1983 Eurythmics hit. Antichrist Superstar (co-produced by Trent Reznor) was an even greater success. Three of the band’s albums have been awarded platinum certification, three more gold, and the band has seen three of its releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums.

Ween Tickets in Seattle

By: Spencer    Category: Paramount Theater Seattle Tickets, Concerts

Ween is the best band in the universe. You need to drop everything you are doing and come see them at the Paramount Theater. Here is some info from wikipedia:

Ween is an alternative rock group formed in 1984 in New Hope, Pennsylvania when Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo met in an eighth grade typing class. The pair became known as Gene and Dean Ween, respectively. Thousands of home recordings later, Ween collected a large underground fanbase despite being generally unknown in pop music.

Their earliest home recordings were anarchic and free-spirited, drawing on influences as far-reaching as Syd Barrett, The Beatles, Queen, Prince, Butthole Surfers, The Residents and the lo-fi punk movement. They self-released 6 cassettes in the late eighties; Mrs. Slack, The Crucial Squeegie Lip, Axis: Bold As Boognish, Erica Peterson’s Flaming Crib Death, The Live Brain Wedgie/WAD, and Prime 5. Around this time, Gene also released his own tape, Synthetic Socks, which featured Dean on a few songs. Ween was often compared in their early years to other offbeat artists such as Frank Zappa and Primus though they would always eschew such comparisons. Ween’s public debut was a Purple Haze cover closing a 1987 talent show; the piece featured a solo, stand-up, acoustic bass and Chrissy Serino on drums.

Daniel Lawrence Whitney (born February 17, 1963 in Pawnee City, Nebraska), better known by the stage name Larry the Cable Guy, is a stand up comedian, actor, and one of the co-stars of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour and the subsequent series Blue Collar TV. He starred in the feature-length movie Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector, provided his voice to star in the animated film Cars as Mater, its subsequent video game and its short film sequel Mater and the Ghostlight, and starred alongside close friend Bill Engvall in the film Delta Farce.

Whitney grew up in Pawnee City, Nebraska; he moved to Palm Beach County, Florida with his family when he was 16 where he attended Berean Christian School. His father, a preacher who once played guitar with the Everly Brothers, worked as the principal of the nearby Berean Christian Elementary School. Whitney worked at Wendy’s until 1985, when he began doing stand-up comedy with other West Palm Beach locals (such as his friend Jamie Porter). At the encouragement of friends and coworkers, he continued his standup work during amateur nights at the Comedy Club in Blue Springs, Missouri. In 1991, he began doing radio comedy, in which he would call into stations as fictional characters. The “Larry” character was created after a friend from one of the stations asked him to call in as a cable installer.

Ben Harper Tickets in Seattle

By: Spencer    Category: Paramount Theater Seattle Tickets, Concerts

The only thing I know about Ben Harper is that he plays with Jack Johnson sometimes. He is coming to the Paramount Theater here in Seattle for a concert. Here is some info from wikipedia:

Harper was born in Claremont, California, U.S. (in California’s Pomona Valley). He began playing guitar as a child in Claremont. He eventually specialized in the acoustic slide guitar (Weissenborn guitars). As a young man, he recorded an LP (Pleasure and Pain) with fellow folk guitarist Tom Freund. After this limited edition record, Harper got a record deal with Virgin Records, who released his debut album, Welcome to the Cruel World (1994).

This was followed by the incendiary Fight For Your Mind (1995) which became a college radio favorite and generated an abundance of songs which still fill his set list to this day.

In 1999 at the Santa Barbara Bowl, Harper met Jack Johnson, who was unknown at the time and had not recorded. Harper obtained a demo tape of twelve of Johnson’s songs that he forwarded to his producer, J.P. Plunier, with whom Johnson recorded his first album.
