The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must cope with both the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters—each daughter’s choice of husband moves progressively farther away from established customs—and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.

At the time of his birth, his Mexican mother, Magdelena Mencía, was engaged in a domestic dispute with his Honduran father, Roberto Holness, and declined to give her son his biological father’s last name. The name appearing on his birth certificate is “Ned Arnel Mencía”, although Mencia has said that out of respect for his biological father he went by the Holness name anyway, and was known as Ned Holness until he was 18 years old.

Mencia was raised in East Los Angeles, California by his aunt Consuelo and uncle Pablo Mencia. By his own admission, staying out of trouble was difficult while growing up, but with the help of his family he excelled in school and stayed out of gangs. He majored in electrical engineering at California State University, Los Angeles, but left early to pursue a career in comedy after a successful performance at an open mic night at The Laugh Factory. He also has an older brother named Joseph Mencia who often appears on Mind of Mencia.

Mencia currently lives with his wife, Amy, in the Los Angeles area in California. They have one child, Lucas Pablo Mencia, who was born on December 14, 2006

Melissa Etheridge Tickets in Seattle

By: Spencer    Category: Concerts, Paramount Theater Seattle Tickets

Melissa Etheridge is a very well known artist and she is coming to Seattle to put on a show. The event is at the Paramount theater. Here is some info from wikipedia:

In 1982, Etheridge moved from Leavenworth, Kansas to Los Angeles to break into the music business. She got some small gigs performing at The Candy Store on the Sunset Strip, as well as two lesbian bars, the Executive Suite in Long Beach and Vermie’s in Pasadena. Some of her early fans from Vermie’s gave her demo tape to Bill Leopold, a friend’s husband who worked in the music business. Etheridge auditioned for Leopold, who was so impressed that he offered to represent her on the spot.

As Etheridge continued performing in lesbian bars in Los Angeles, Leopold arranged for music executives to come see her play. Eventually, she caught the attention of A&M Records, who hired her as a staff songwriter. For two years, Etheridge wrote music for A&M and many of her songs were recorded by mainstream artists. In 1985, Etheridge sent her demo to Olivia Records, a lesbian record label, but was ultimately rejected. She saved the rejection letter, signed by “the women of Olivia,” which was later featured in Intimate Portrait (TV series), the Lifetime Television documentary of her life.

The Phantom of the Opera in Seattle

By: Spencer    Category: Attractions, Paramount Theater Seattle Tickets

I have never seen this show but I hope to soon. The Phantom of the Opera is one of those shows that needs to be seen at least once. It is playing for several nights at the Paramount Theater here in Seattle. Here is some info from wikipedia:

The Phantom of the Opera (in French, Le Fantôme de l’Opéra) is a French novel by Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910. Some believe it to have been inspired by George du Maurier’s Trilby. Trilby is based on real events related to the Paris Opera House which Leroux investigated, initiated by stories of an opera house ghost. Initially, the novel sold very poorly and was even out of print several times during the twentieth century. Today, it is considered to be a classic of French literature, though it is overshadowed by its many subsequent adaptations. The novel was translated into English in 1911. It has since been adapted many times into and stage productions, the most notable of which were the 1925 film depiction and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical, starring Michael Crawford as the Phantom, Steve Barton as Raoul, and Sarah Brightman as Christine, which is now the longest running Broadway show in history and the most lucrative entertainment enterprise of all time, its worldwide box office over the past 20 years out-grossing even the highest grossing film in history, Titanic.

Billy Idol Tickets in Seattle

By: Spencer    Category: Concerts, Paramount Theater Seattle Tickets

I remember this guy from bad 80’s videos and his appearance on The Wedding Singer. Billy Idol is coming to the Paramount Theater here in Seattle and you need to see him. Here is some info from wikipedia:

Billy Idol (born William Michael Albert Broad) is a British hard rock singer-songwriter and musician.

With his spiked peroxide blonde hair, sneering visage and a voice capable of singing growling rock and roll and crooning ballads, Idol became a cultural icon during the 1980’s. He first achieved fame as the lead singer of the first-wave UK punk band Generation X. When that band broke up, Idol moved to New York where he met guitarist Steve Stevens. The two of them set out to make punk music “sexier”, recording a series of hit singles. A series of stylish music videos made him one of the first stars of MTV. His success has waned since the 1990s, but Idol continues to make music.

Avenue Q Tickets in Seattle

By: Spencer    Category: Attractions, Paramount Theater Seattle Tickets

I don’t know anything about this show so I am giving you a little extra from wikipedia. The show is at the Paramount Theater here in Seattle. Here is some info from wikipedia:

Avenue Q is an award-winning musical conceived by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, who wrote the music and lyrics, and directed by Jason Moore. The book is by Jeff Whitty. The show was produced by and opened at the Off-Broadway Vineyard Theatre in March 2003. The production transferred to Broadway in July 2003 and won several Tony Awards, including the award for Best Musical. It is still running on Broadway and holds the position of 28th longest running musical in Broadway history. The show has spawned a 2005 Las Vegas production, a 2006 West End production and various international productions. A U.S. national tour began in July 2007.

The show is largely inspired by (and is in the style of) Sesame Street: Most of the characters in the show are puppets (operated by actors onstage), the set depicts several tenements on a rundown street in an “outer borough” of New York City, both the live characters and puppet characters sing, and short animated video clips are played as part of the story. Also, several characters are recognizably parodies of classic Sesame Street characters: for example, the roommates Rod and Nicky are versions of Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie, and Trekkie Monster is based on Cookie Monster. However, the characters are in their twenties and thirties and face adult problems instead of those faced by pre-schoolers. The characters use profanity, and the songs concern adult themes. A recurring theme is the central character’s search for a “purpose.” Since the musical soundtrack for it was released, the song “The Internet is For Porn” has become particularly popular on websites such as YouTube and can be downloaded for free from the official website.

Tom Jones Tickets in Seattle

By: Spencer    Category: Concerts, Paramount Theater Seattle Tickets

Good old Tom Jones is coming to the Paramount Theater soon. Come out to Seattle to see him. Here is some info from wikipedia:

Tom Jones rose to fame in the mid-1960s, with an exuberant live act that included wearing tight breeches and billowing shirts, in an Edwardian style popular among his peers at the time. He was known for his overt sexuality, before this was as common as it has become in subsequent years.

In 1963 he became the frontman for Tommy Scott and The Senators, a local beat group. Clad in black leather, he soon gained a reputation in the South Wales area of the United Kingdom, although the Senators were still unknown in London.

In 1964 they laid down seven tracks with maverick Telstar producer Joe Meek, and took them to various labels in an attempt to get a record deal, with no success. The plan was to release a single, Lonely Joe / I Was A Fool, but the ever-flighty Meek refused to release the tapes. Only after It’s Not Unusual became a massive hit, Meek was able to sell the tapes to Tower (USA) and Columbia (UK). The group returned to South Wales and continued to play gigs at dance halls and working men’s clubs. One night, at the Top Hat in Cwmtillery, Jones was spotted by Gordon Mills, a London-based manager originally from South Wales. Mills became Jones’ manager, and took the young singer to London. He also renamed him Tom Jones, an ingenious moniker that not only linked the singer to the image of the title character - a good-looking, low-born stud - portrayed in Tony Richardson’s film of Fielding’s “Tom Jones”, which was a huge contemporary hit, but also subtly emphasized his nationality. Gordon Mills gave many rock stars their stage names, among them Engelbert Humperdinck (born Arnold George Dorsey). The Senators became the Playboys, and later still the Squires. It was the beginning of the second phase in Jones’ career.
